Celebrating women driving climate action: insights from Boomitra’s trailblazing team
Share

In celebration of International Women’s Day, we spotlight women at Boomitra whose expertise and leadership are pivotal in advancing regenerative agriculture and carbon removal. Their work supports farmers and ranchers across the world, while combating climate change and driving equity and inclusivity for smallholder and marginalized growers.

Meet Ann, Soumya, and Andrea, three leaders on Boomitra’s team. Read on as they share their journeys, inspirations, and visions for a regenerative future.

Ann Maina: Bridging carbon markets and community impact

As Boomitra’s East Africa Lead, Ann Maina knows that farmers hold the key to our planet’s future. Her journey with Boomitra has included verifying soil health across 130,000 acres in Kenya, catalyzing soil regeneration and community empowerment.

What inspires her?

Trailblazing leaders: Women like Dr. Agnes Kalibata, the former Minister of Agriculture in Rwanda and former President of AGRA (Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa), who played a crucial role in scaling sustainable farming practices and ensuring that African farmers have the tools and resources they need to thrive.

The strength of farmers: Seeing first-hand the impact from the women-led farming groups Boomitra works with. “Women farmers are often the backbone of regenerative agriculture, managing soil health, implementing sustainable practices, and leading their communities toward climate resilience.”

What she wants credit buyers and sustainability officers to know:

We’re driving human impact. “Many people assume that carbon markets and soil restoration are purely scientific or financial endeavors, but what surprises most is how deeply human our work is. We don’t just focus on soil health and carbon sequestration; we work directly with farmers, ranchers, and pastoralists, empowering them to earn carbon credits and improve their livelihoods.”

Local farmers are sources of knowledge and wisdom. “Their traditional knowledge, passed down for generations, often aligns with regenerative practices that modern science now confirms as crucial for soil health and carbon storage.” Boomitra’s adaptive and inclusive approach ensures that we’re offering improved agricultural practices that are ecologically and culturally appropriate, rather than being prescriptive.

Sustainability doesn’t exist in a silo. “Sustainability isn’t just about the environment—it’s about people. When farmers see a direct economic benefit from soil regeneration, they become long-term stewards of the land. That’s the kind of win-win solution we strive for.”

Dr. Soumya Shree K: Healthy soils, healthy community

In Boomitra’s Bangalore office, Dr. Soumya Shree K combines her passion for soil science with a deep appreciation for family and community. Her journey includes a strong foundation in agronomy and crop science, but it was her grandmother’s independence and strong spirit that truly inspired her. “She instilled in us the mindset to embrace challenges and overcome obstacles with resilience. She strongly encouraged us to pursue higher education and empowered us to build our careers with confidence. Her belief that if she could succeed, so could we, has been a guiding force in my journey,” Soumya reflects. This blend of personal inspiration and scientific curiosity drives her work at Boomitra, where she explores innovative ways to enhance soil health and support sustainable agriculture.

Her turning points:

Research: Studying the effects of nano zinc and silicon particles on rice during her Master’s research paved the way to pursuing her PhD.

Community: Finding a group of like-minded women at Boomitra’s office who support each other through challenges and celebrate even the smallest victories. “It’s a truly uplifting and empowering work environment. Cheers to all my amazing ladies at Boomitra!”

Advising: Today, Soumya supports Boomitra’s “carbon hacking” team, one of our unique offerings to farmers and ranchers. Soumya leverages her soil science expertise to develop and provide actionable insights and recommendations to growers, empowering farmers and ranchers to adopt regenerative practices confidently.

Andrea Okun: Sharing soil’s story by connecting the dots

For Andrea, Boomitra’s Director of Marketing, soil carbon is about recognizing the work farmers do, feeding us and stewarding land for future generations. Raised in rural Wisconsin, she recalls: I saw how deeply farmers are connected to the land—and how much their work impacts both people and the planet. That lesson propelled her to study environmental engineering and earn a certificate in regenerative agriculture.

By helping lead our Marketing team, Andrea connects the dots between our incredible team, ranging from geospatial scientists to agronomists, so that their work reaches the right people and drives real impact.

Her playbook for change:

Watch: The Soil Story by Kiss the Ground. It does an incredible job explaining, in an engaging and hopeful way, how healthy soil can pull carbon from the atmosphere, restore ecosystems, and grow more resilient food systems. Their storytelling helps make soil—something often overlooked—shine like the climate solution it truly is.

Read: Project Drawdown’s Table of Solutions, a science-backed ranking of the most effective ways to reduce and remove greenhouse gas emissions. It highlights both systemic and everyday actions that drive real impact.

Act: Amplify solutions like reducing food waste, which tops Project Drawdown’s climate action list.

Empower: “Dive in, stay curious, and trust that your perspective is valuable. Sustainability and agriculture need diverse voices, and there’s no single path into the field. Whether you come from science, policy, business, or hands-on experience, your skills can make an impact”

Why Boomitra’s approach works

Boomitra’s success is rooted in its people-centric approach. By empowering over 100,000 farmers across 10 countries, together we have restored 5 million+ acres of land, transforming not just landscapes but livelihoods. The key to this impact lies in combining cutting-edge technology— the first Verra-approved project to use remote sensing for carbon measurement—with the wisdom of local communities. Boomitra’s commitment to inclusivity is evident in its active engagement of women farmers and ranchers, who play a pivotal role in shaping sustainable agriculture practices from Kenya’s grasslands to India’s croplands, and from Argentina’s Pampas to the Sonoran Desert.

Alongside our partners and growers, Boomitra’s diverse team is proving that “regenerative agriculture” isn’t just a buzzword—it’s a pact between people and the planet.
