(7 November 2023) – Boomitra, a global leader in carbon marketplace innovation, celebrated a remarkable victory today at The Earthshot Prize Awards ceremony in Singapore. HRH Prince William announced Boomitra as The Earthshot Prize Winner in the ‘Fix Our Climate’ category. This accolade, often likened to winning an Oscar for the planet, recognizes Boomitra’s exceptional efforts in combatting climate change through innovative technology and regenerative agriculture.
“On behalf of the Boomitra family, I’m deeply honored and humbled to accept The Earthshot Prize. This prize is a recognition of the hard work and dedication of our partners on the ground, the Boomitra team, and all the farmers and ranchers we work with, who work every single day towards moving the needle on climate change.” – Aadith Moorthy, Boomitra CEO & Founder
Climate change is a giga-scale problem, with annual emissions nearing 40 gigatons each year. We can’t solve a gigaton problem with megaton solutions. Our target? An additional gigaton of CO2 sequestered in the soil by 2030.
Boomitra, which means “friend of the earth” in Sanskrit, rewards farmers and ranchers for adopting regenerative land management practices. These practices capture and store carbon in the soil while enhancing soil health, agricultural yields, water quality, and biodiversity.
Boomitra is already working with 150,000 farmers and ranchers managing five million acres of land across Africa, South America, and Asia. Our cutting-edge satellite and AI technology measures soil improvements, tracking the soil’s ability to store carbon over time. In exchange, companies and governments can offset their emissions with confidence by purchasing third-party verified carbon credits from Boomitra’s marketplace. The majority of revenue generated from the sale of each credit goes directly to the farmer, rancher, or landowner – the key drivers of carbon removal. Boomitra works with landowners of all sizes to make carbon finance accessible, from 0.5-acre smallholder farms to large ranches.
With this award, we aim to expand our solution to more countries, enabling every farmer and rancher to turn their day-to-day practices into a climate solution.
The search for the 2023 Winners began in December 2022, when The Earthshot Prize embarked on a global, nine-month search for the most inspiring and innovative solutions to the greatest environmental challenges facing the planet. A global panel of 59 scientific, academic, and subject-matter experts chose this year’s class of 15 Prize Finalists from more than 1,100 nominations submitted from around the world. All nominations were independently vetted by The Earthshot Prize’s implementation partners at Deloitte.
The five Winners were selected by Prince William and the prestigious Earthshot Prize Council. Chaired by Christiana Figueres DBE, architect of the Paris Agreement, the Prize Council is a global body of activists, experts, and influencers committed to championing urgent and innovative action to protect the climate and our natural environment. Members of the Council include: Prince William, Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah, Cate Blanchett, Sir David Attenborough, Ernest Gibson, Hindou Oumarou Ibrahim, Jack Ma, Indra Nooyi, Luisa Neubauer, Naoko Yamazaki, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Stella McCartney, and Yao Ming.
“The light of optimism is burning bright in our Earthshot Finalists. From Boomitra, S4S, and Acción Andina, to GRST and WildAid Marine Program, our Winners and all our Finalists remind us that, no matter where you are on our planet, the spirit of ingenuity, and the ability to inspire change, surrounds us all.” – Prince William
In addition to the Prize’s investment in the five Winners, all 15 Finalists will receive mentorship, resources, and technical support from The Earthshot Prize Fellowship Programme, a year-long programme to accelerate the growth of their groundbreaking solutions. That support includes access to the Prize’s robust network of influential businesses, investors, and climate experts, including The Earthshot Prize’s Global Alliance of Partners, comprised of some of the world’s largest businesses, donors, investors, and environmental organizations committed to climate action.
The 2023 Earthshot Prize Awards Ceremony will be broadcast on BBC One in the United Kingdom, PBS in the United States, various MultiChoice channels across Africa, Mediacorp’s Channel 5, mewatch and Mediacorp YouTube Entertainment Channel in Singapore, and on The Earthshot Prize’s YouTube channel in other territories around the world from Sunday 12 November.
