Boomitra Carbon Farming in East Africa through Soil Enrichment
Around 75% of the population in Kenya is dependent on agriculture, with its croplands being home to a large number of small and marginal farmers. The occurrence of erratic rains and frequent droughts, along with unsustainable land use practices, have imposed constraints on agricultural productivity and stability, leading to severe food shortages in the country.
Boomitra partners with local organizations that work with these farmers to adopt improved agricultural practices, including reduced tilling, mulching with crop residues, organic manure application, water management, and agroforestry activities. These practices are proven to increase soil organic carbon and enable farmers to improve their productivity. CUs may be issued for the greenhouse gas emission reductions and removals associated with the production of cereals, grains, pulses, sugars, fibers, and other crops in this region.

Climate, Community, and Biodiversity
Improved agricultural practices offer a powerful opportunity to reverse land degradation and recarbonize soils, effectively creating carbon removals and promoting overall soil health. In this project, farmers are encouraged to adopt agricultural practices that have proven to increase soil organic carbon, which in turn enhances soil moisture and nutrient retention, leading to higher crop yields.
Despite facing barriers to adoption, this project works closely with partners to create feasible and sustainable solutions that enable grassroots behavior change and help farmers surmount these obstacles. The project provides direct financial benefits to small and marginal farmers through carbon credits, thus boosting their livelihoods. Additionally, regenerative agriculture practices help build farmer resilience against extreme climate variations. Farmers are better equipped to combat the repercussions arising from conditions of erratic rainfall and severe drought. This project is expected to generate several community benefits, promoting broader sustainable development outcomes.
