Boomitra Grassland Restoration in Colombia
The Colombian livestock sector, spanning approximately 38% of the country, sustains over 630,000 farmers and generates around 810,000 jobs. However, conventional livestock practices have led to overgrazing, which accelerates habitat degradation, reduces biodiversity, and worsens soil erosion and land degradation. These issues threaten Colombia’s ecological health, increase climate vulnerability, and create economic instability for farmers.
Our “Boomitra Grassland Restoration in Colombia” project tackles these challenges by working closely with ranchers to implement sustainable grazing practices nationwide. The project aims to rejuvenate soil health and significantly boost carbon sequestration across Colombian grasslands through practices such as rotational grazing and silvopasture. In collaboration with field partners, we provide training to empower local communities, create job opportunities, and enhance resilience to climate change. Carbon finance generated through this initiative will help ranchers transition to sustainable practices, fostering both ecological and economic stability in the region. Verified Carbon Units (VCUs) may be issued for the greenhouse gas emissions reductions and removals linked to livestock and dairy production in the region.

Climate, Community, and Biodiversity
Boomitra enables an ecosystem where ranchers can access knowledge and digital agronomic tools to increase sequestration potential. The sequestered soil carbon then translates to internationally certified carbon credits, of which a supermajority share is routed back to the ranchers involved in the project. The revenue from carbon credits ensures an additional source of livelihood and an opportunity to reinvest in their community.
In addition to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the Boomitra Grassland Restoration project in Colombia provides multiple co-benefits. By restoring soil health and promoting sustainable grazing, the project enhances biodiversity, improves water retention, and mitigates soil erosion—strengthening ecosystem resilience across Colombian grasslands. It also supports rural communities by generating jobs, offering training opportunities, and stabilizing income sources for ranchers. These co-benefits boost local livelihoods and foster climate resilience, creating a more sustainable future for the region's people and the environment.
