PRESS RELEASE
Boomitra, a soil carbon project developer and 2023 Earthshot Prize winner, today announced that Deloitte North and South Europe (NSE) is supporting its Northern Mexico Grassland Restoration Project through the purchase of more than 18,000 high-quality soil carbon removal credits. The purchase reinforces Deloitte’s sustainability strategy, actively reducing its own emissions while investing in high-integrity solutions, beyond its value chain, to reach net-zero by 2040.
Boomitra’s award-winning soil carbon project – recognized by the Earthshot Prize for its scalable climate impact – supports 158 ranchers across the biodiverse yet severely degraded Chihuahuan and Sonoran deserts. By adopting Improved Grassland Management (IGM) practices such as rotational grazing and water conservation, these ranchers are reversing desertification, rebuilding soil carbon, and restoring fragile ecosystems. The approach boosts land productivity, sequesters carbon, and delivers direct economic benefits: the majority of revenue generated from carbon credit sales is returned to participating ranchers and their communities, providing direct financial benefits and supporting local sustainability. The project is verified under Verra’s latest soil carbon methodology (VM0042).
As the Implementation Partner for the Earthshot Prize, Deloitte NSE conducted an independent assessment and on-the-ground diligence of the project, helping validate its climate and community impact. Climate Impact Partners, a global leader in high-quality carbon market solutions, conducted its own advanced due diligence on the project, checking and verifying the quality and integrity of Boomitra’s approach.
“The Earthshot Prize didn’t just award our innovation – it connected us with organizations who share our commitment to regeneration, supporting local communities, and real climate impact,” said Aadith Moorthy, founder and CEO of Boomitra. “From independently vetting Earthshot nominations to now purchasing credits from an Earthshot winner, Deloitte NSE’s leadership in climate action is accelerating producer-led carbon removal and ecosystem restoration.”
Smruti Naik-Jones, chief sustainability officer, Deloitte North and South Europe, commented: “Deloitte NSE is committed to using its reach, capabilities and investments to drive the transition to a sustainable future. In addition to advancing towards our net-zero 2040 target, we support a portfolio of transformational projects, including the purchase of carbon credits. Our relationships with The Earthshot Prize and Climate Impact Partners allow us to provide our capabilities, support and investment to innovative entrepreneurs like Boomitra, and to help scale impactful solutions aligned with the latest science and emerging standards.”
“Projects like this demonstrate how carbon finance can unlock corporate climate action and deliver lasting, tangible impact – restoring ecosystems, improving livelihoods, and removing carbon from the atmosphere,” said Sheri Hickok, CEO, Climate Impact Partners. “Deloitte NSE is setting a powerful example of how companies can go beyond their value chains to support credible, community-led climate solutions. It’s a compelling demonstration of how high-integrity carbon removals can accelerate progress to net zero, whilst creating meaningful benefits for people and nature.”
Each year, Deloitte NSE’s Sustainability & Climate practitioners support The Earthshot Prize Council to independently assess thousands of nominations, from established changemakers to emerging solutions and sustainable technologies. Winning the “Fix Our Climate” Earthshot category has meant Boomitra has continued to receive support from the Earthshot prize team to scale its innovative solution.
Boomitra (meaning “friend of the earth” in Sanskrit) is a large-scale carbon project developer leveraging artificial intelligence and satellite remote sensing to measure and scale carbon removal in agricultural soils and grasslands. The company works with more than 100,000 farmers and ranchers across 5 million acres in the Global South, connecting them directly to international carbon markets so they benefit from their climate-positive practices.
Boomitra’s projects are registered and independently verified under leading standards such as Verra and Social Carbon, and are structured to achieve eligibility under the Paris Agreement’s Article 6 framework through host country authorization and corresponding adjustments. Beyond soil carbon, Boomitra is also pioneering its first Biomass Carbon Removal and Storage (BiCRS) project in Botswana, addressing bush encroachment, restoring savannas, and providing long-term carbon storage alongside community and biodiversity benefits. atmosphere.
Deloitte is helping to lead the way toward a low-carbon future by guiding its clients on their sustainability journeys, advancing meaningful actions and change within its own operations and supply chain, and collaborating with nonprofits and civil society. Deloitte demonstrates its commitment to climate action through its net-zero by 2040 target, which was validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) in 2024.
