Frequently Asked Questions
General
What are carbon removal credits?

A carbon removal credit is a certificate that represents one ton of carbon dioxide equivalent removed from the atmosphere. Companies or individuals can purchase carbon removal credits to offset their carbon footprint, and the money from the sale can be used to fund projects that store carbon that was once in the atmosphere. According to the UN IPCC, every pathway to net zero involves significant deployment of carbon removals.

How does soil store carbon?

Soil is one of the largest carbon sinks on the planet, but unfortunately, the world’s managed soils have lost more than 50-70% of their carbon stocks. Carbon sequestration is the process by which plants draw down carbon from the atmosphere through photosynthesis and deposit it in the soil in the form of organic matter, such as dead plant roots, leaves, and other organic materials. Certain farming practices, such as conservation tillage and cover cropping, enhance the amount of carbon stored in the soil. Increasing soil carbon levels not only reduces atmospheric carbon, but also improves soil health and fertility.

How does your technology work?

Boomitra uses advanced remote sensing technology and proprietary AI capabilities to measure soil carbon sequestration on a global scale. Our technology uses satellites and regional machine learning models cross-referenced with local soil samples to measure the absolute soil organic carbon level, soil moisture, nitrogen, phosphorus, and other variables on a given plot of land with a 10m resolution to 30 cm or more depth, at any given time. The difference in the absolute carbon levels across a period of time is proportional to the carbon credits generated during that time. Our technology has been third-party certified and makes the soil measurement process cost-efficient, time-effective, and scalable across various landholding sizes.

What satellites do you use?

The data Boomitra uses is from a variety of public and private satellites across the electromagnetic spectrum. Our ML models are trained using large proprietary ground-truth datasets (millions of soil samples) that we have access to through our global partner network.

What is the difference between credit buyers, project partners, and growers/producers?

Credit buyers are organizations or individuals who purchase high-quality carbon removal credits from Boomitra to offset their emissions. Project partners are organizations, such as NGOs, farming organizations, CPG companies, agribusinesses, and government agencies, that work with us to enroll farmers and ranchers into our carbon programs. Finally, growers include all of the farmers, ranchers, and landowners in our carbon program who are adopting improved agricultural practices that increase the rate of carbon drawdown.

Carbon Credit Buyers
Why buy carbon credits from Boomitra?

Boomitra’s standards-based, transparent, equitable, and inclusive carbon credits allow corporations to not only offset emissions but also promote resiliency and enable the stewards of the planet – farmers and ranchers – to improve soil health. By choosing Boomitra, companies can actively address global warming and contribute to a more sustainable future.

How does Boomitra ensure the credibility of each carbon credit?

Our credits are “Standards-Based”.  Every credit created and sold undergoes rigorous third-party certification against the highest world-class standards. Boomitra aims for high levels of excellence in achieving additionality, permanence and environmental and social co-benefits for every credit created.

How can I monitor and trace the credits that I buy?

We provide complete transparency through our dashboards that allow buyers to continuously monitor carbon sequestrations and payments powered by our AI technologies. All ground data collection is done digitally and provides complete transparency through our real-time dashboards.

Are you a broker or reseller of credits?

No, Boomitra promotes, creates, and manages the projects directly using our partner ecosystem. All credits are created and owned by Boomitra as listed in the registries. So, we do not resell but directly generate and sell credits to end buyers and users.

How do you ensure that the benefits go to the deserving landowners?

All our projects are equitable. The vast majority of revenue from each carbon credit sold goes directly to the landowners and the local community. All our projects are inclusive. Farmers across the world, of any size, growing any type of crop can participate in our projects.

How do you ensure the permanence of the carbon stored?

Permanence is ensured through detailed monitoring and trusted support on the ground. We will continue to monitor the stored carbon using our technology as long as satellites exist. Furthermore, we partner with trusted local organizations who have worked very closely with the landowners in their community for many years. They enable landowners to maintain their improved management practices and reduce the likelihood of permanence loss.

How do you ensure that every credit is additional?

Every credit generated is a result of the landowner/farmer going beyond “business as usual” practices and by measuring how the soil carbon increases over and above the “business as usual” changes.

I am a government body. Can I buy Article 6.4 credits or Internationally Transferred Mitigation Outcomes (ITMOS)?

Yes. We are designing projects that qualify for Article 6.4 credits or ITMOS. Please stay in touch.

Project Partners
What types of organizations does Boomitra partner with for carbon projects?

Boomitra partners with all types of organizations, including but not limited to NGOs and foundations, farming organizations, agribusinesses, CPG companies, and governments. Learn more about the role of each type of partner on our Partner page.

Why should my organization partner with Boomitra?

Your organization should consider partnering with Boomitra if you are interested in promoting sustainable agriculture and mitigating climate change all while earning a new source of revenue. Partners earn a percentage of the proceeds from the sale of carbon credits generated by the farmers and ranchers they help enroll in Boomitra’s carbon program.

What is the role of the partner in the implementation of a project?

Partners are our eyes and ears on the ground. They help in recruiting the farmers/landowners into our projects, ensure accuracy of documentation, and promote practices to be adopted by their local farmers/landowners.

What is the role of the partner in monitoring a project?

Partners must record practices that are adopted by their farmers/landowners, provide documentary evidence on the practices and conduct surveys from time to time. They must also assist in third party verifications, audits and field visits from time to time.

Does Boomitra provide carbon insets?

Absolutely! Boomitra can help companies monitor and reduce their Scope 3 emissions from their supply chain if they work with agricultural lands for farming and ranching. For instance, companies looking to reduce their Scope 3 emissions from their supply chain can use the carbon credits generated from a project and retire them to count against their GHG emissions.

Farmers and Ranchers
How can I participate in Boomitra projects?

To join our program, you will work with one of our local partners who will help you enroll in our projects, provide advisory on the improved practices and obtain required proof for ownership of land and other documents. They will be able to also guide you on the practices you can follow to increase the soil carbon.

How large of a farm or ranch do I need to have to participate?

Boomitra works with farms and ranches of all sizes, from smallholder farms with as little as 1 acre, to large ranches with 100,000+ acres, and everything in between.

How do farmers and ranchers benefit from enrolling in your program?

Farmers and ranchers gain multiple advantages by participating in Boomitra’s program:

1) Generate supplemental income through the sale of carbon credits originating from their land.

2) Elevate land health and productivity, boost crop yields, and enrich soil fertility through the adoption of advanced agricultural methods.

3) Leverage Boomitra’s cutting-edge technology for precise agronomic insights, including metrics on soil moisture and nutrient levels (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium), thereby enhancing both sustainability and land productivity. These benefits are further amplified by the financial gains from carbon credit sales.

Is farmer and rancher data secure?

Yes.  All data is completely encrypted, safe and secure as per Boomitra’s privacy and data-sharing policies. Boomitra does not share or sell any farmer or rancher details with anyone.

Does being in Boomitra’s carbon farming program involve selling a part of my farm or ranch to Boomitra or somebody else?

No, being in the Boomitra program does not involve selling a part of your ranch to Boomitra or anyone else. Our program is designed to monetize the carbon that your ranch is capturing and sell the carbon credits in the international market. You retain full ownership of your land and are simply compensated for your efforts in adopting climate-friendly practices.

Can I enroll if I am leasing someone else’s land?

This is determined on a case-by-case basis depending on the legality of your country. Please contact us.

What if I do not have proof of ownership of my land?

This is determined on a case-by-case basis depending on the legality of your country. Please contact us.

Is there a fee to participate in Boomitra’s program?

No, There is NO FEE for the farmer to participate in enrolment, carbon measurement, and third-party audit, issuance of credits, and sale of credits. You will receive the agreed-upon share of the revenue from the credits sold. But the payment to you is subject to any levy or local taxation.

How will I get paid for the credits that I help create?

All payments to you from Boomitra will follow the agreed payment methods and all payments will be either as direct bank transfer or other official methods.

Who sets the price of carbon credits?

We engage in bilateral negotiations with each buyer to ensure that they are receiving the highest quality credits at a fair price for them. Think of it like a cattle or crop buyer who seeks out the best quality directly from the source, bypassing intermediaries, to secure a direct agreement. This allows us to maximize the value of our credits and ensure that both parties are satisfied with the outcome of the negotiation.

I have a greenhouse. Can I participate?

No. At this moment, we do not support greenhouses.

I have a timber plantation. Can I participate?

No. At this moment, we do not support timber or similar plantations.
