Farmers and their communities are at the heart of our mission. These individuals bear the brunt of climate change’s harsh realities, facing dwindling yields and degraded lands. And yet, they are doing frontline work to reverse these trends, restore soil health, and remove carbon from the atmosphere.
Boomitra develops high-quality projects that create tangible, measurable benefits for farmers and their communities by advancing regenerative agriculture and unlocking access to carbon finance. Our initiatives empower farmers to restore soil health, increase productivity, and strengthen resilience against climate challenges, all while enhancing their financial stability and growth. With a farmer-first approach, Boomitra is transforming agricultural communities into hubs of sustainability and economic opportunity.
Meet the farmers and ranchers from across the globe who are leading this transformation.
Hannah Karanja’s 300-acre farm in Kenya was once trapped in a cycle of monocropping and heavy plowing, leading to depleted soil and unsustainable economic returns.
After Boomitra helped her diversify her crops, implement crop rotation, and reduce tillage, Hannah’s farm saw a transformation. Her soil health improved significantly, boosting crop yields and increasing profits. The new practices enhanced soil fertility and allowed her to harvest more frequently, providing a stable income and better food security.
Today, Hannah is teaching her grandchildren the sustainable methods that have transformed her farm, leaving a legacy of resilience and prosperity.
“In my childhood, the weather patterns were steady, the rains came at specific times, and so our parents knew when to plant and when to harvest, but now the climate is very unstable. If you do not take the right measures, you will not have a good harvest.”
Shivling Chowglah’s 3-acre farm in India was plagued by compacted soils, which hindered plant growth and microbial activity, resulting in low productivity.
By switching to a natural fertilizer and neem oil pest control, Shivling improved his soil’s fertility and water retention. The shift towards sustainable practices allowed for greater plant diversity and higher yields.
With the help of Boomitra’s farmer app, Shivling is able to better manage his land and optimize its productivity, ensuring his farm is more resilient and productive than ever before.
“Through farming, we were given the opportunity to grow healthy, nutritious food for people everywhere. There is no greater purpose than this.”
La Margarita is a 150-hectare farm located in Cañuelas, Provincia de Buenos Aires, Argentina. The farm’s clayey and partly calcareous soil has undergone significant transformation through regenerative livestock practices and reduced tillage.
La Margarita grows a variety of pastures such as Agropiro, Festuca, Lotus tenuis, and white clover, while also maintaining 50% of native pastures.
These practices have fostered healthier soil, improved biodiversity, and bolstered the farm’s resilience. For the team at La Margarita, healthy soil is more than just fertile land—it represents a balanced ecosystem that supports long-term sustainability.
“A healthy soil has a structure that allows for nutrient balance, biological diversity, and sufficient moisture to maintain its fertility.”
Jorge Pando’s ranch in Northern Mexico had faced poor land conditions for 20 years due to conventional ranching practices and overuse of agrochemicals. It only grew one species of grass, sparsely.
After adopting rotational grazing, expanding soil rest periods, and building gabions to improve water infiltration, the results were remarkable. Within just one year, Jorge saw a dramatic increase in biodiversity, with 17 species of grass flourishing, and basal cover rising from a mere 2% to 20%.
With support from the Boomitra team, our local partner SGanaderas, and satellite data, Jorge has turned his ranch into one of the most productive and sustainable in the region, proving that regenerative practices can restore even severely degraded lands.
"Para mi padre, muchas otras personas y para mí, estas palabras significan futuro. Un proyecto como este es muy importante y muy difícil al mismo tiempo porque requiere un gran cambio, pero es el único camino a seguir".
Basavaraj Horatti’s family farm in Karnataka faced declining soil health and productivity due to years of chemical fertilizer use.
After joining Boomitra’s URVARA program and meeting with our partner Subhiksha, he transitioned to organic farming, adopting techniques such as composting, crop rotation, and the use of manure from his livestock. Over time, his soil has becréditosome richer in organic matter and water retention has improved. Despite initial skepticism, Basavaraj saw a steady increase in crop yields and better land conditions. His transformation is not just a success story for his farm but a model for the future of sustainable farming in his community, inspiring others to follow suit.
“Farming is a passion for me. If my daughter Chaitanya grows up to nurture the same love for farming, I will make sure I support her.”
Florence John Koros transitioned from a bank job to full-time farming 23 years ago, and her 300-acre farm in Kenya is now a thriving example of sustainable agriculture.
After adopting practices like crop rotation, minimal tillage, and reducing fertilizer use with the help of Boomitra’s partner organization, Florence saw significant improvements in crop yields. Her maize harvests doubled, and wheat yields more than tripled.
Beyond financial benefits, these practices have also improved soil health, increased carbon sequestration, and reduced soil erosion. Florence’s farm has become a beacon of hope for sustainable farming in her community, and her story is inspiring the next generation of farmers, including her sons, to carry forward her legacy.
“My sons chose to work alongside me, inspired mainly by the increase in yields, but also due to better profits and the overall community impact of farming. I would like to encourage more women and young people to join farming and do it in the proper manner.”
Vertika Chowdhary and her family in Uttarakhand, India, have been farming for generations, but it wasn’t until 2020 that they made the bold move to transition from conventional farming to regenerative practices.
After joining Boomitra’s program, Vertika adopted practices like composting and crop residue management, which enriched the soil and eliminated the need for harmful pesticides. The results were striking not only did her yields increase, but there was also a significant reduction in pollution from stubble burning. Vertika’s success story is a testament to the power of community-driven education, as she now shares her knowledge with other women farmers in the area, helping to build a supportive network for sustainable agriculture.
“Earlier when new crops were grown after burning previous crop residue, the yield turnover was low. However, after the avoidance and simultaneous adoption of improved practices, we now harvest more than 15 quintals of sugarcane crop over previous harvests.”
Over the years, Daniela has witnessed the harsh realities of land desertification in San Luis, Argentina. However, her commitment to regenerative agriculture has reversed the degradation of her ranch, La Siempre Viva.
By adopting holistic planned grazing and improving her irrigation systems, Daniela has transformed barren land into a thriving ecosystem, with healthier soil and flourishing plant and animal life. Her efforts have not only improved the welfare of her animals but have also led to a more biodiverse environment, with new grasses and flowers sprouting on her once-dead paddocks.
Daniela’s work shows how regenerative practices can restore life to arid lands.
“It seemed like a dream come true, that in some way, the world was finding ways to reward those who are dedicated to producing while preserving the environment.”
In 2017, Javier bought a struggling 1228-hectare ranch in Chihuahua, a region in northern Mexico known for its diversity of microclimates, including one of the world’s most biodiverse deserts. Initially, Javier’s ranch faced severe challenges: poor soils, unproductive grasses, and carbon emissions due to erosion and accelerated decomposition.
Undeterred, Javier began implementing rotational grazing, improving water infiltration and soil aeration, which enabled plant growth and carbon sequestration. When Javier joined our Northern Mexico project and started working with our local implementation partner Manejo Regenerativo de Ranchos A.C., he adopted intensive grazing along with actionable insights into his soil.
Javier’s ranch is now healthier, supports a larger cattle herd, and is a thriving example of regenerative ranching that continues to sequester carbon and enhance biodiversity.
“It’s impressive how you give something to the land and it gives you back something very beautiful.”
These stories collectively illustrate the profound impact that regenerative agriculture and carbon finance can have on farmers around the world. Each farmer’s journey represents a transformation not only in their land but also in their livelihoods. Regenerative agriculture really does lead to environmental and economic resilience.
