In Sanskrit, Boomitra means “friend of the Earth.” For ten years, we’ve believed farmers are the Earth’s greatest friends and allies, and we’ve been building toward a world where everyone can join them. Today, we celebrate a decade of turning that belief into action. 

Our journey began in 2016, when our founder Aadith Moorthy encountered a community mourning a farmer in southern India. Failed monsoon rains had devastated the farmer’s crop. The experience sparked a question that would shape the next ten years: how could technology help people whose livelihoods depend on the land? 

Then a student at the California Institute of Technology, Aadith set out to build an app to help farmers use water more efficiently. ConserWater grew from that idea. As the technology developed, a new possibility emerged: helping farmers earn income for the carbon stored in healthier soils. ConserWater became Boomitra, and conservation became a route to carbon finance. 

Ten years later, that journey has come full circle. Thousands of farmers and ranchers are now receiving payments for their work to restore the planet. Behind those payments are seasons of patient work: changing grazing patterns, protecting soil, and rebuilding the land’s capacity to sustain life. This is the milestone we are proudest to celebrate. 

In India, where our story began, URVARA’s first issuance generated 47,311 independently verified soil carbon credits through the work of more than 6,000 smallholder farmers. Credit sales have since translated into payments reaching participating farmers. An idea inspired by the pressures facing one farming community is now bringing an additional source of income to others. 

In Northern Mexico, ranchers are also receiving payments for their regenerative work. The project spans four million acres and involves 158 ranching families. In February 2026, it issued 3.03 million verified carbon removal credits; in June, it earned an ‘A’ rating from MSCI Carbon Project Ratings. For participating rancher Ángel G., the significance is personal: “It is deeply rewarding to receive payment for my contribution to mitigating climate change.” These payments can help fund the next round of restoration, from fencing for better grazing management to improvements in ranch infrastructure. 

Rigorous soil carbon measurement has always started in the dirt. Physical soil samples are the “ground-truth” on which credible soil carbon measurement rests. Combining those measurements with satellite data and AI helps us monitor changes across landscapes, from smallholder croplands to extensive rangelands. It connects the work farmers and ranchers do every day with evidence that can support independently verified carbon credits. 

None of this happens through technology alone. Local partners build trust, scientists test the evidence, organizations purchase credits, and farmers and ranchers commit to years of stewardship.
