After seeing farmers suffer from failed monsoon rains, Aadith Moorthy founded Boomitra to address the twin crises of climate change and farmer wellbeing. Equity—the fair and inclusive participation and benefit-sharing among all stakeholders—is central to our mission, and it is crucial for every carbon project.
By equitably compensating agricultural landowners for sequestering carbon in their soil, we support the livelihoods of those who sustain the global food supply.
Our projects support growers of all sizes, from small and marginal farmers with as little as half an acre to ranchers managing thousands of acres of grasslands. Boomitra’s approach to carbon projects produces multifaceted benefits for landowners and local communities while helping them effectively mitigate and adapt to climate change.
Sustainability isn’t a zero-sum game. Boomitra’s third-party validated soil carbon projects demonstrate that everyone can benefit from ecosystem restoration and climate mitigation—from local communities and landowners to project partners and credit buyers. Our meticulous project development team prioritizes the following factors to ensure transparency, inclusivity, and equitable outcomes throughout each project’s lifecycle:
Stakeholder Engagement: We conduct comprehensive stakeholder mapping to involve all relevant parties throughout the project. Our regular stakeholder engagement meetings actively incorporate all voices, fostering inclusivity and collaboration.
Local Partners: Our trusted partners know the local context and speak the local language. They provide tailored training and continuous support, leveraging their rooted cultural knowledge to help farmers adopt the most suitable practices for their region.
Free, Prior, and Informed (FPI) Consent: We always secure FPI Consent from local communities, ensuring that we conduct all project activities with the full knowledge and voluntary agreement of landowners and stakeholders. Boomitra describes the project activities, impacts, and implications over the project’s lifetime in the local language. Once the participating farmers or ranchers agree, Boomitra engages with them with a proper legal agreement vetted by local lawyers.
Project Governance: Our governance framework is inclusive and transparent, with clear roles, responsibilities, and accountability mechanisms to manage projects effectively while increasing benefits for each stakeholder.
Social Risk Assessment and Safeguards: We conduct social and environmental risk assessments for each of our projects to identify and mitigate potential negative impacts, implement proactive safeguards, and continuously monitor project activities.
Equitable Benefit-Sharing Arrangements: Boomitra establishes revenue sharing (not profit sharing) at the beginning of each project. This approach ensures that landowners benefit directly from the total value of credits sold, not just what remains after expenses. Our model is designed to ensure fairness, clarity, and traceability from the start. The majority of the carbon revenue is returned to the farmers and communities involved.
Grievance Redress and Social Impact Monitoring: Our multilevel grievance redress mechanisms are easily accessible, timely, and culturally sensitive, ensuring prompt and fair issue resolution. Simultaneously, we monitor social impacts through regular assessments and maintain adaptability to achieve equitable outcomes for all stakeholders involved.

Carbon markets open significant financial opportunities, and Boomitra works diligently to ensure that money goes into the correct, deserving hands. Establishing local project ownership and equitable benefits sharing can be challenging in some nature-based projects, like blue carbon (who owns the ocean?) and forest carbon (is the land public or under threat of logging?).
However, agricultural soil carbon projects are much more straightforward. Boomitra does not own any project land; instead, participating farmers and ranchers maintain full ownership of their land. These landowners are compensated for removing carbon from the atmosphere and storing it in their soil. To validate that participants legally own their land and can fully benefit from our projects, we adhere to rigorous processes outlined by Verra. This involves several key steps:
Documentation of Land Rights: Participants must provide legal documentation proving their ownership or control over the land, such as land titles or lease agreements.
Verification of Ownership: Boomitra verifies the authenticity of these documents by cross-checking with local land registries and relevant authorities.
Community Consultation: Boomitra engages with local communities and stakeholders to confirm that there are no disputes over the land and that participants have the recognized right to use it.
Continual Monitoring: We conduct periodic checks throughout the project to monitor and update land ownership status and confirm that participants maintain ownership.
These steps confirm that landownership is secure, transparent, and undisputed, allowing landowners to fully participate in and benefit from our projects.
The Boomitra Farmer App, 100% free to farmers and ranchers participating in our projects, serves as the foundation of our digital ecosystem, transforming how smallholder farmers engage with sustainable practices and carbon finance. The app supports localized, real-time engagement in multiple languages, making it accessible to diverse farming communities, even in remote areas. Designed for varying levels of digital literacy, it facilitates seamless onboarding, real-time engagement, and secure data management.
Through the app, Boomitra delivers localized, science-based guidance via Packages of Practices (PoPs). These PoPs equip farmers with actionable strategies tailored to their region, including organic composting, crop rotation, integrated pest management, irrigation scheduling, and sustainable fertilization. Recommendations are continuously refined using satellite data, field trials, and farmer feedback to ensure relevance and effectiveness.
By combining advanced technology with farmer-centric design, Boomitra helps improve yields, enhance soil health, and maximize carbon sequestration—while ensuring farmers stay at the center of the solution.
Farmer- and Rancher-First:We are committed to ensuring the people restoring the land are the primary beneficiaries of the carbon market. All participating farmers and ranchers sign formal agreements outlining roles, responsibilities, revenue-sharing terms, and long-term collaboration.
Data-Backed Integrity: Our technology ensures transparent, reproducible, and verifiable impact. SOC changes are tracked using publicly available satellite data and scientifically validated models.
Community-Led: We do not impose external agendas. Project design and implementation reflect the needs and consent of local stakeholders.
No Land Displacement: Our projects do not displace traditional land uses or restrict movement without consent. Regenerative grazing is designed to enhance, not undermine, pastoralist livelihoods.
Boomitra has established a robust stakeholder consultation mechanism, ensuring stakeholders understand project details and can raise concerns regarding project impacts. Each consultation provides a non-technical project summary (in pamphlet or electronic format), and a clear explanation of grievance mechanisms, project risks, costs, and benefits. Details such as the date, time, and location are publicized in advance to encourage full participation.
Stakeholders are given multiple opportunities to provide feedback through both physical and digital forms, and a formal consent process ensures informed participation. Information validation and verification processes under leading standards, including Verra’s VCS and Social Carbon Standard, is also provided. Participants can also view where their land stands in the validation or verification cycle directly through the Boomitra app, ensuring full transparency throughout the process.
We maintain continuous engagement through regular communication in-person and via virtual sessions, phone calls, SMS, email, and the Boomitra app. Milestone updates are shared through multiple channels—both digitally and in person—ensuring accessibility for all participants. Local partners also conduct site visits to address concerns, reinforce messages, and support implementation on the ground. We also adopt an adaptive management approach, continuously reviewing and refining our consultation practices based on stakeholder input.
During engagement meetings, we ensure discussions cover grievance mechanisms, project risks and benefits, VCS registration and verification, and stakeholder roles in monitoring and credit issuance. These conversations are facilitated by both the Boomitra team and local partners and are reinforced through on-the-ground monitoring visits and training sessions.
