Boomitra Grassland Restoration in Costa Rica
Costa Rica’s livestock sector spans more than one-third of the country’s land and contributes nearly 24% of national greenhouse gas emissions. Intensive grazing practices have degraded soils, reduced biodiversity, and limited productivity—placing ecosystems and rural livelihoods at risk in one of the world’s most biodiverse countries.
Boomitra’s Grassland Restoration Project is helping reverse that trend. Partnering with ranchers and local organizations, we regenerate landscapes through nature-based practices like rotational grazing, pasture improvement, and silvopastoral systems. With digital tools, training, and access to carbon finance, ranchers boost soil organic carbon while improving biodiversity, water quality, and resilience. The grouped project aims to restore 250,000 acres, enroll over 2,500 ranchers, and remove 170,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually—delivering measurable climate and community impact.

What Makes This Project Unique
This project addresses two urgent challenges simultaneously: regenerating degraded pasturelands and reducing agricultural emissions in one of the most biodiverse countries on Earth. Boomitra’s approach combines AI-driven remote sensing with on-the-ground partnerships to deliver accurate, equitable, and transparent carbon removals.
Every participating rancher, regardless of operation size, can track their soil carbon data through the Boomitra app, access real-time insights, and receive a fair share of credit revenue. The monitoring system ensures credibility through continuous, third-party-verified measurements. Capacity-building programs further ensure that ranchers are supported throughout the transition to regenerative practices.
By restoring degraded grazing lands at scale, the project improves carbon sequestration, enhances climate resilience, and contributes directly to community well-being. The Costa Rica Grassland Restoration Project is a high-impact model for delivering soil carbon removals that benefit people, nature, and the planet.
