Boomitra, Aves Argentinas, y BirdLife International join forces to expand native grasslands carbon project in Argentina with support from Rio Tinto.

Boomitra, Aves Argentinas, and BirdLife International, with support from Rio Tinto, are accelerating restoration and protection of Argentina’s endangered temperate grasslands.

The collaboration combines Boomitra’s leadership in soil carbon project development, the conservation expertise of Aves Argentinas and BirdLife International, and Rio Tinto’s support through an investment in conservation research and a committed offtake of carbon credits. Together, the organizations will help expand the reach of Alianza del Pastizal—a regional alliance of ranchers, scientists, and conservationists—to deliver measurable benefits for climate, biodiversity, and local communities.

Supporting conservation and biodiversity

Rio Tinto’s investment is enabling the scale-up of grassland management activities under Alianza del Pastizal and the establishment of a new biodiversity and soil carbon research station in the Aguapey River Basin. This station, led by Aves Argentinas, will include a new protected area that showcases regenerative grazing and livestock management practices, helps to safeguard threatened Pampas ecosystems, and advances long-term scientific research on soil organic carbon. Enhanced soil and threatened species sampling at the research station, data collection, and analysis will strengthen both carbon and biodiversity monitoring, with impact certification expected under Verra’s Climate, Community and Biodiversity (CCB) Standards. Rio Tinto’s investment includes a committed offtake of carbon credits from the project. The investment was agreed in 2024, and the offtake agreement was finalized in May 2025.

Delivering impact at scale

Currently covering 30,900 hectares of endangered grasslands, el project is on track to expand to 200,000 hectares over the next two years. Since its launch in 2021, it has removed an estimated 100,000 de toneladas of CO from the atmosphere; participantes the project scales, annual removal is projected to exceed 500,000 de toneladas annually. As a Verra-registered project (VCS #3291) under the VM0042 Agricultural Land Management methodology, it represents one of the most advanced large-scale soil carbon efforts in South America.

Benefits for ranchers and communities

Ganaderos participating in this project are supported to adopt regenerative practices such as rotational grazing, improved forage cover, and water management. These practices improve soil health, enhance resilience, and increase productivity, while generating new income streams through carbon finance. Participating ranchers will receive a majority share of carbon credit revenue, while local implementation partners reinvest a portion into community-based initiatives such as beekeeping, ecotourism, and sustainable land management.

“Partnering with Aves Argentinas and BirdLife International, with support from Rio Tinto, demonstrates what’s possible when technology, conservation, and community come together. This initiative shows that carbon finance can deliver verified removals at scale while strengthening rural livelihoods and safeguarding biodiversity for generations to come,” Aadith Moorthy, CEO and Founder of Boomitra.

Acerca de Boomitra

Boomitra (meaning “friend of the earth” in Sanskrit) is a large-scale carbon project developer leveraging artificial intelligence and satellite remote sensing to measure and scale carbon removal in agricultural soils and grasslands. The company works with more than 100,000 farmers and ranchers across 5 million acres in the Global South, connecting them directly to international carbon markets so they benefit from their climate-positive practices.

Boomitra’s projects are registered and independently verified under leading standards such as Verra and Social Carbon, and are structured to achieve eligibility under the Paris Agreement’s Article 6 framework through host country authorization and corresponding adjustments. Beyond soil carbon, Boomitra is also pioneering its first Biomass Carbon Removal and Storage (BiCRS) project in Botswana, addressing bush encroachment, restoring savannas, and providing long-term carbon storage alongside community and biodiversity benefits. atmosphere.
