But there\u2019s another ecosystem quietly storing a vast share of carbon. Grasslands, including rangelands, savannas, and shrublands, blanket roughly half of Earth\u2019s land surface, sustain billions of people, and support rich local biodiversity. Beneath the familiar sweep of grasses lies a dense architecture of roots and microbes that functions as a living pump\u2014drawing down atmospheric CO\u2082 and storing it as stable soil organic matter.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>At a time when humanity must remove 220\u2013360 gigatons of CO\u2082 by 2100 to stabilize the climate (<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/report\/ar6\/wg3\/\">IPCC AR6 WG III, 2022<\/a><\/span>), restoring the planet\u2019s grasslands offers one of the most scalable and cost-effective solutions available.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1 style=\"color: #004752; font-weight: bold;\">The challenge: degraded soils, lost potential<\/h1>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Land degradation is widespread\u2014and accelerating. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unccd.int\/resources\/factsheets\/desertification-and-drought-day-2025-factsheet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UNCCD estimates that up to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">40% of the planet\u2019s land<\/span> is already degraded<\/a>, and roughly half of the world\u2019s natural pastures are stressed by overuse and climate extremes. Without intervention, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.downtoearth.org.in\/environment\/unesco-warns-90-of-earths-land-could-be-degraded-by-2050#:~:text=Soil%20plays%20a%20crucial%20role,improved%20soil%20protection%20and%20rehabilitation.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">degradation could affect as much as <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">90% of land by 2050<\/span><\/a>. When grasslands lose vegetation and soil structure, they stop storing carbon and start releasing it\u2014turning a natural carbon sink into a carbon source and accelerating climate change.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The costs go far beyond lost carbon: degraded grasslands drain productivity, accelerate desertification, undermine water security, and erode biodiversity\u2014from soil microbes and pollinators to ground-nesting birds and grazing wildlife. The result is mounting community strain as pastoral livelihoods falter and vulnerability rises.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>By improving land management practices, these same landscapes can recover\u2014storing carbon reliably and supporting stronger, more resilient communities.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1 style=\"color: #004752; font-weight: bold;\">How grasslands store carbon<\/h1>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Grasslands are natural carbon removal machines. Through photosynthesis, plants capture CO\u2082 and route a large share belowground into root systems and ultimately soil organic matter (SOM). Because grasslands store the majority of their carbon belowground in roots and soil, their carbon stocks are <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucdavis.edu\/climate\/news\/grasslands-more-reliable-carbon-sink-than-trees\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">more resilient<\/a><\/span> to fire and drought than aboveground forest biomass. Across climates and soils, restored grasslands can sequester ~<a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/science.abo2380#:~:text=Abstract,many%20cultural%20services%20(1).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">0.5\u20133e per hectare per year<\/span><\/a>, with outcomes driven by rainfall, texture, baseline condition, and management. Because of their scale\u2014billions of hectares worldwide\u2014grasslands offer a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/science.abo2380\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">multi-gigaton<\/span><\/a> opportunity for carbon removal and climate adaptation.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We can learn from nature\u2014and accelerate this process with thoughtful, regenerative management.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1 style=\"color: #004752; font-weight: bold;\">Regenerative land management<\/h1>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Regenerative land management increases soil carbon on grasslands by reshaping how plants grow and how soils function, improving both productivity and practice, that means matching stocking rates to forage, rotating herds to create planned rest, spreading water and shade points so animals distribute nutrients more evenly, reseeding or protecting deep-rooted perennials, and curbing invasive annuals and erosion. These shifts lengthen the photosynthetic season, raise root-to-shoot ratios, and increase below-ground inputs that form stable soil aggregates\u2014while better cover and litter slow oxidation and keep moisture where plants can use it.
