Through photosynthesis, plants provide sugars, proteins, and organic acids to carbon-limited soil microbes,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0like<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2023\/06\/mycorrhizal-fungi-hold-co2-equivalent-to-a-third-of-global-fossil-fuel-emissions\/\"> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>m<\/strong><\/span><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2023\/06\/mycorrhizal-fungi-hold-co2-equivalent-to-a-third-of-global-fossil-fuel-emissions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>ycorrhizal fungi<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and bacteria. In exchange, the soil-dwelling microbes provide the plant with key nutrients. These microbes decompose organic matter, converting it into stable organic compounds resulting in the storage of carbon in the soil. Cover crops facilitate year-round carbon sequestration while simultaneously providing a host of other benefits. They fix nutrients into the soil, smother weeds, control pests and diseases, increase biodiversity, and have been shown to increase cash crop yields.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n\r\n <br \/>\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Pastoreo rotacional\u00a0<\/strong><\/h5>\r\n<p>\r\n\r\n <br \/>\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When livestock are left on a plot of land for too long, they destroy plant life and compact soil. This leads to <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/srccl\/chapter\/chapter-3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">desertification<\/span><\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Conversely, ungrazed land does not benefit from livestock&#8217;s nutrient-rich manure or an increased turnover of organic matter. With rotational grazing, livestock are intentionally moved from set portions of land, called paddocks, to others. This allows some paddocks to rest and regrow while other paddocks are grazed. This approach to grazing, resembling the movement of wild herds, stimulates plants to cultivate deeper and more abundant root systems. These strong roots sequester carbon, aerate soil, allow water to infiltrate the soil, and enhance soil biodiversity.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n\r\n <br \/>\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Labranza m\u00ednima<\/b><\/h5>\r\n<p>\r\n\r\n <br \/>\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tilling, also known as plowing or cultivation, refers to turning over the soil in preparation for planting crops. Farmers stand to gain <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.stanford.edu\/2019\/12\/06\/reduced-soil-tilling-helps-soils-yields\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>numerous benefits<\/strong><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by reducing or eliminating tilling on their land. While conventional tilling is often practiced to improve aeration, incorporate plant matter, and control weeds, it comes with detrimental consequences. Turning over the soil destroys soil aggregates and exposes a greater surface area of soil to air and sunlight. Organic carbon gets released, important fungal networks get destroyed, and the land is left <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/S0341-8162(01)00148-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>vulnerable to erosion<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
